Welcome to the Studio

This is the scene from where I write, in the daylight basement of the home my family and I are building (with the help of some friends) in northeastern Washington State, about an hour south of the Canadian border on the last foothills of the Selkirk Mountain range. I'm enchanted by its simplicity, by the mixture of nature and industry, by a scene that could be straight out of the Old West.

Breaking News is a double entendre', as the Christian creed is both immediate (as in news that is relevant to everyday life) and wounding (as in news that breaks you). The gospel, in other words, is not happy news, in spite of the many Christian carnival barkers of the modern church who try to convince us otherwise. It is, of course, good news, but good things can be -- and usually are -- difficult, unsafe, challenging.

Breaking News Studios is a dual experiment in human attention and in the time-tested notion of compelling witness. I want to pay attention to what T.S. Eliot called "the permanent things," which I believe, deep in my bones, is not fully contained by what we can see. There's more to this life than meets the eye, and when you're as fortunate as I am to have this scene greet you every day, that's saying a lot.
